1863 - Arizona becomes a Territory - Capital is Prescott
1867 - Arizona Capital moves to Tucson
1877 - Capital returns to Prescott
1889 - Capital moves to Phoenix
1900 - Population 122,391
1903 - Salt River Valley Water Users Association formed for irrigation
1907 - Gambling prohibited in Arizona
1910 - Population 204,354
1911 - Roosevelt Dam is completed as the highest masonry dam in the world.
1911 - Carl Hayden (our first Sheriff) was elected to the U.S. Congress as Territorial Congressman.
1912 - Statehood at the 48th State on February 14th, 1912
Women have the Right to vote in Arizona, 8 years before Federal government
1913 - Women can now work in Arizona - only 8 hours/day.
1917 - Goodyear Tire and Rubber buys 24,000 acres southwest of Phoenix as cotton is used in tires. Factories were converted, later, to manufacture airplanes for WW2.
1919 - Grand Canyon becomes a National Park. One had to take the train from Williams, Arizona to see it.
1920 - Federal government approves women Right to Vote. Population in Arizona is 334,162.
1921 - Arizona gets its Colorado River water allocation. It is much larger that NV.
1922 - KTAR begins broadcasting music, only. KTAR stands for "Keep Taking the Arizona Republic", as the Arizona Republic owned it.
1924 - Indians receive the Right to Vote.
1926 - Southern Pacific Railroad completes the loop around the Salt River Valley.
1927 - Air transportation arrives at Sky Harbor Airport with 3 flights/day.
1929 - "Westward Ho Hotel" becomes the first hotel in Arizona to have air conditioning.
1930 - Population 435,573. Del Webb moves to Arizona for health reasons and to build all of the military bases in Arizona (except Davis Monthan in Tucson).
1934 - Phoenix is called the "Valley of the Sun"
1937 - Phoenix North High School opens.
1940 - Salt River Project is created.
1941 - Battleship Arizona is sunk in Pearl Harbor on December 7th, killing 1200 sailors.
1941 - Goodyear creates the first large manufacturing plant in Arizona, manufacturing airplanes for the War. The next largest employer is Alcoa/Reynolds.
1942 - Internment Camps are established.
1942 - George Washington Carver High School created.
1943 - Construction begins on Luke, Williams and Davis Monthan air force bases to train pilots.
1944 - German prisoner of war camps created in Papago Park (where the Zoo is today)
Arizona will receive Colorado River Water.
1946 - Arizona becomes a Right to Work State.
1949 - Motorola establishes electronics division in Phoenix because of the dry air (less corrosion) and Arizona is a Right to Work state.
1955 - Uptown Plaza at Central/Camelback becomes the largest single shopping center between Dallas and Los Angeles.
1959 - Beeline Highway is completed between Phoenix and Payson.
1960 - Population exceeds 1 million. Every 10 years, we add 1 million Arizona residents, until present day.
1964 - Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium opens.
Barry Goldwater runs for President against LBJ.
1968 - Phoenix Suns play their first game.
Construction begins on the Central Arizona Project (CAP).
1973 - Metro Center opens.
1978 - Ned Warren Sr. is convicted of land fraud. He died in prison.
1980 - Groundwater Management Act.
1981 - Sandra Day O'Conner becomes the first woman on the US Supreme Court.
1985 - CAP is in full operation. We get 1.9 M acre/ft of water per year. It takes 1 acre/ft for one home/year. We have plenty of water.
1987 - Pope John Paul II visits Phoenix. Sun Devil Stadium is re-named "Sun Angel Stadium" for the one day visit.
1988 - Fair Housing Title VIII includes families with children and the handicapped.
Cardinals move the team to Phoenix.
1998 - Top five elected officials are women.
2000 - Population is 5 million.
