Scottsdale Broker/Owner Welcomes Home Second Veteran

Less than a year after welcoming retired Navy Seal Ryan Job into the Sentinels of Freedom program and Scottsdale community, Howard Lein of RE/MAX Excalibur and a team of mentors rolled out the red carpet for a second Sentinel, retired Staff Sergeant and Iraq War veteran Donovan Spieth. An accident in Germany in 2005 left Spieth paralyzed from the waist down.

"These young folks are doing their best to protect us," Lein says. "I think the very least we can do is help them when they are coming back."

SENTINEL: Donovan Spieth in Iraq.

Lein's team with the support of local businesses and 11 celebrated artists, hosted a private reception and art auction Jan. 24 at Rima Fine Art in Scottsdale. The event honored Spieth for his service and sacrifice, welcomed him to his new home, and marshaled support for the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation.

Guests were able to bid on art pieces, visit with Russian artist Yuri Gorbachev whose works hang in the Louvre and the White House, and see the Warrior One Hummer, which travels across the United States as the centerpiece of the RE/MAX Tour for the Troops benefiting Sentinels of Freedom.

The foundation grants four-year scholarships to service members who've sustained severe injuries in the line of duty. Based upon need, assistance can include a housing allowance and furnishings, a new vehicle, career guidance, education and training, and financial and personal mentorship.

"So many organizations talk about helping, but few follow through," Spieth says. "The people at Sentinels come through. What they give you is a step up and a direction in life. They expect you to better your life.

"It'll be a challenge, but the sky's the limit."

Our Heroes

Donovan Spieth

Staff Sergeant Donovan Spieth was with the 10th Special Forces group, 1st Battalion, Charlie Company.  After spending one tour in Iraq, Donovan was in Germany, and headed back to the States for advanced training, when he was badly injured in an accident.  Donovan is now paralyzed, and in a wheelchair.  He wants to finish his education, and is looking forward to living in the Phoenix area and a new career.  He loves to ride his hand cycle, and can be seen on the trails around his apartment.  He says he expects his new life to be a challenge, but “the sky’s the limit.”

Ryan Job

Navy Seal, SO2, Ryan Job was deployed to Iraq where he was shot in the face during combat.  As a result, Ryan lost sight in both eyes, but didn't lose his optimistic spirit.  Rather than return to his home in San Diego, where his options were limited, he instead applied to and qualified for a four year Sentinels of Freedom Life Scholarship.

As a recipient of a Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship, Ryan will receive "rent free" housing, new furniture and other household supplies, educational opportunities, financial and personal mentoring and career-placement assistance and training.

On June 25, 2007, Ryan and his wife Kelly moved to Arizona and took up residence in a beautiful new condominium in North Scottsdale provided by their Team Leader Howard Lein, Owner of RE/MAX Excalibur Realty and other local residents.  Watch Video.  Read AZ Republic Article.

 The Sentinels Need Your Help

It can cost up to $25,000 a year for four years, per life scholarship recipient to help these young warriors get the jump-start back into civilian life that they need.  Although we have corporate support from huge companies like AT&T, Chevron and American Express, we still fall short of having the necessary funds to help the estimated 3,500 soldiers who are how rehabilitating in military hospitals across the United States with injuries such as amputations, blindness, deafness, paraplegia, and severe burns.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Sentinels of Freedom, Scottsdale or contact us at 480-346-5372 to learn how you can help.  Whatever your beliefs regarding our military presence in the Middle East, supporting our troops is a cause that can unify us.  We are not a politically motivated organization, instead we are a helping-hands group with a deep appreciation for the sacrifices our men and women in the military make, and a profound respect for their drive to rehabilitate after severe injury and make a place for themselves and their families in a civilian world.

The Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundationsm is an IRS Approved 501C3 Non Profit Foundation (documentation available upon request).  Our mission is to provide life-changing opportunities for men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who have recently suffered severe injuries and now need the support of grateful communities to realize their dreams.   Our national website is www.SentinelsOfFreedom.org.
